Sewing as Self-Care: How Crafting Has Been My Sanctuary šŸ’ššŸ§µ

Life has a way of throwing challenges at us, sometimes all at once. Over the past few years, I’ve faced more emotional turmoil than I ever thought I could handle. And through it all, my greatest saviours have been my daughter and, surprisingly enough, sewing. Crafting with my hands has become more than just a hobby—it has become my refuge, a way to tune out the chaos of the world, and a form of self-care that keeps me grounded.

Finding Peace at the Sewing Machine 🧵

When everything around me feels overwhelming, there is something magical about sitting down at my sewing machine. The hum of the machine, the feel of the fabric between my fingers, and the rhythm of stitching have a way of transporting me to a different place. In those moments, I can shut off from the world. All the worries and stress seem to fade into the background, and my focus narrows down to the simple, satisfying act of creating.

Sewing is about carving out a little space for myself—a space where I don’t have to be anything for anyone else. I can just be me, alone with my fabric and my thoughts. The act of cutting, pinning, and stitching gives me a sense of purpose, and every small achievement—whether it’s a perfectly aligned seam or a completed project—brings a little spark of joy. In a time when everything else feels out of my control, this tiny sense of accomplishment has been such a lifeline.

The Messy Reality, But It’s Worth It ✨

I won’t pretend it’s all perfect, though. The dining table has become my sewing headquarters, and that means that sometimes dinner gets eaten on the sofa, plates balanced on our laps, as the table is taken over by fabric, thread, and half-finished projects. The mess can drive me absolutely potty—it’s frustrating to try and balance my passion with the practicalities of everyday life. But in the end, I know it’s worth it.

Sewing leaves behind a beautiful kind of mess—one that tells the story of creation, of effort, and of moments spent doing something that heals me. When I see the scattered fabric scraps and the pins strewn across the table, I don’t just see chaos. I see the proof that I carved out time for myself, that I did something meaningful and restorative. And honestly, that makes dinner in the lounge for a few days a price worth paying.

A Source of Joy and Calm šŸ’–

For me, sewing isn’t really about the finished product—especially since I hardly ever finish a project! But when I do, it’s unbelievably satisfying. Most of the time, I’ve found joy in the process itself. Sewing forces me to slow down and focus on something positive, like a form of meditation. It’s my way to clear my mind and find a little bit of peace amid the storm.

Up until now, I haven’t actually attempted many clothes—my makes have been more practical: handbags, curtains, and cushion covers. It’s still deeply satisfying to take fabric and transform it into something new and useful. In a life filled with uncertainty, the act of creation reminds me that there are still things I can control. Every stitch is a reminder of my strength—proof that I can get through difficult times and create something beautiful from it.

More Than a Hobby, A Lifeline 🌱

Sewing has become my sanctuary, a way for me to find balance when everything else feels shaky. It has helped me express myself in ways that words never could. There’s something about the act of making—of taking raw materials and transforming them into something entirely new—that mirrors my own journey of growth. When I sew, I feel connected to myself, to a part of me that is creative, capable, and resilient.

My children are, of course, the brightest lights in my life. I have two grown-up sons as well as my daughter, though it’s just her and me at home now. Each of them means the world to me in their own way. But sewing has been my own secret saviour—the thing that gives me strength when I need it most, that lets me be the best version of myself for them. The fabrics, the threads, the creative mess—it all represents my journey to finding peace and joy in the middle of life’s chaos. And I wouldn’t trade that for anything. šŸŖ”šŸ’•
