The Dressmaker – Sewing, Style, and a Little Bit of Revenge ✂️

I recently watched The Dressmaker (2015) and oh my goodness – what a film! If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s part drama, part comedy, and part couture catwalk, all rolled into one. It stars Kate Winslet as Tilly Dunnage, a dressmaker who returns to her small Australian hometown armed with her trusty Singer sewing machine and a whole lot of fabulous fabric.

Now, I have to say, that Singer machine really made me smile ❤️. It looked just like the one my grandma gave me years ago – and honestly, I still believe it’s the best sewing machine I’ve ever had. They just don’t make them like they used to, do they? Reliable, sturdy, and with that satisfying hum when you sew.

The real show-stoppers, though, were Tilly’s creations. Kate Winslet looked absolutely stunning in those Dior-inspired outfits 👗. What I loved most was that she was rocking them with her Marilyn Monroe curves – proof that fashion is for all shapes and sizes, not just the stick figures we so often see in couture. Every dress she wore made a statement, and you could really feel how clothes can transform not only how others see us, but how we see ourselves.

I’ll admit, some of the film felt a little bit on the cheesy side 🧀, but it didn’t matter – because it left me feeling so inspired. I’m now itching to get my next sewing project on the go. In fact, it’s nudged me to finally think about trying my hand at dressmaking (I’m more at home with soft furnishings 🪡 but keep saying I’ll branch out). Maybe even a Masterclass is on the cards…

If you’re looking for a film that celebrates the power of sewing, fashion, and a little bit of drama, The Dressmaker is well worth a watch. And who knows – like me, you might just find yourself dusting off your machine and planning something fabulous! ✨
